Microorganisms found in cannabis flower and cannabis products have the potential to be harmful to patients when consumed or inhaled. In most states, pathogenic organisms such as Aspergillus spp., E. coli, Salmonella spp., and fungal biproducts called mycotoxins are deemed necessary to test.
In addition to pathogenic microorganisms and their biproducts, the medical cannabis, pharmaceutical, and food industries utilize indicator organisms to monitor hygienic conditions during the production process. The presence of specific bacteria (Total Viable Aerobic Bacteria, Total Coliforms, and/or Bile-tolerant Gram-Negative Bacteria) and/or total yeasts or molds over set limits is an indicator of poor hygiene and potential microbiological contamination.

Pesticides used in agriculture can be potentially dangerous and pose great health risks. The cannabis and hemp cultivation industries are no different. Exposure to pesticide residues at high levels can be toxic to patients and consumers. We utilize liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to detect and quantify the following 56 pesticides specified by the HDOH. The acceptable limit for each pesticide is less than 1.0 ppm (parts per million):
Residual water in cannabis flower can lead to microbial growth. The higher the moisture content, the more susceptible the flower. Moisture testing conveys the shelf-life and safety of a sample. The ideal moisture content of cured cannabis is between 8% and 13%. We use a moisture analyzer to calculate moisture content.
Hair, mold, insects, sand, dirt, plastic, and other contaminants can enter products during cultivation, manufacturing, or packaging. To ensure proper handling and sanitation, we inspect for foreign matter using a dissecting microscope and fluorescent microscope illuminator.
Water activity is a measure of the amount of water that is unbound (i.e. free) and available to microorganisms to use for growth. It is an important indicator of microbial contamination in cannabis products. At a high water activity (>0.65 aW), there is a higher chance of microbial growth and contamination. Spectra Analytical utilizes a water activity meter that uses laser precision to give accurate results for even the most challenging volatiles.
